ABOUT CHEKIKA AND DIRECTIONS TO THE PARK
The Area of Chekika
The Chekika recreation area sits on a large tree island surrounded by an open sawgrass prairie. Throughout the year freshwater flows through the prairie south from Lake Okeechobee toward the Florida Bay and southwest toward the Gulf of Mexico. This shallow, slow-moving sheet of water serves as the sole freshwater source for all of South Florida.
The tree island, or hardwood hammock, exists on a limestone ridge that rises a few feet above the wet prairie. Dry year round, this island is the ideal place to find a blend of temperate and tropical zone vegetation. This habitat is also home to a variety of wildlife, including alligators, birds, and bobcats.
Added to Everglades National Park on October 1, 1991, Chekika was originally known as the Chekika State Recreation Area. Chekika, along with 44,000 acres of state owned lands in the Everglades, was transferred to Everglades National Park as part of the Everglades Protection Act. The land, once completely annexed into the park, will play an important role in restoration of the entire Everglades ecosystem.
