Afe Neg Combite is a non-profit organization which was founded on
December 9, 1976 by a Catholic priest, Occide Jean, known as Pe
Sicot in Kenscoff, a township located at 20 kilometers in the
Eastern side of Port-Au-Prince at an altitude of 1,500 meters.
OUR MISSION
" Men Kontre "
is
to improve the living conditions of the local farmers while
providing them with health care, adult education as well as
children’s and offering them the financial capital to conduct their
daily activities. The organization is already thirty years old and
hopes to perpetuate its services not only in the township of
Kenscoff but also in several other regions of the country to raise
the standard of living of Haitian peasantry, which is the driving
force and productive support of the Haitian economy.
“Prêt a la pauvreté”
On
the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the organization, the
members and executive committee intend to create a loan counter to
allow the members of the organization to be more productive and the
community to become more prosperous.
The
counter will operate according to the Grameen Bank or community bank
model as established by Mohamed Yunus in Bangladesh in the 1970’s.
The model of
has been reproduced in other
countries and has experienced much success due to timely
reimbursement of the awarded loans and to the improvement in the
standard of living of those loans beneficiaries. There is no reason
why that model would not succeed in the community of Kenscoff and
for the poor people in Haiti who for too long have called for
improvement in their life style.
The loan counter will encourage
savings and will extend credit exclusively to Afe Neg Ak Neguesse
Combite members to make them more effective in their activities of
cattle raising and cultivation. It will also be the property of the
members.
The AFE NEG COMBITE Executive
committee solicits from members of the Haitian community at large
and benefactors living in Haiti a contribution to start this project
whose initial cost is calculated to U.S. $500,000. Thank you for
your contribution to the future progress of our farmers!
